North Mississippi doesn’t really have an off-season for pests. Between the humidity, the clay soil, and summers that stay warm well into September, something is active almost every month of the year. Knowing what to expect each season — and when to bring in a professional before a problem gets out of hand — saves homeowners from bigger repairs and bigger bills down the line.
Spring (March–May): termite and ant season
Spring is the big one. Eastern subterranean termites, the species found in every Mississippi county, typically swarm anywhere from April through June in North Mississippi, usually after a warm rain. A swarm of discarded wings on a windowsill or near an outdoor light is one of the clearest signs a colony is active nearby. Ants also wake up in force this time of year, moving indoors looking for food and moisture as the ground warms.
Watch for: winged swarmers indoors or near foundation vents, mud tubes running up the foundation, ant trails along baseboards or counters.
Summer (June–August): mosquitoes, fire ants, and heat-loving pests
Heat and humidity bring mosquitoes, fire ants, wasps, and roaches into full swing. Standing water after summer storms is often all a mosquito population needs to multiply fast, and fire ant mounds tend to show up in lawns almost overnight.
Watch for: new fire ant mounds after rain, mosquito activity around standing water (gutters, plant saucers, low spots in the yard), roach sightings in kitchens and bathrooms.
Fall (September–November): the move indoors
As temperatures start to drop, spiders, stink bugs, boxelder bugs, and rodents all look for a warmer place to spend the winter — and a house looks pretty good to them. This is also when mice and rats start testing gaps around doors, utility lines, and foundations.
Watch for: rodent droppings in pantries or garages, scratching sounds in walls or attics, a sudden uptick in spiders indoors.
Winter (December–February): quiet on the surface, not underground
Visible pest activity slows down, but subterranean termite colonies don’t go away — they simply retreat deeper into the soil, still feeding, still growing. Winter is actually one of the better times to schedule a preventive inspection, since it gets a home checked and, if needed, treated before spring swarm season arrives.
When it’s time to call a professional
A single ant on the counter usually isn’t cause for concern. Recurring sightings despite cleaning and over-the-counter sprays, any winged swarmers indoors, mud tubes on the foundation, or rodent droppings are all signs the problem is established enough to need a professional look.
Local, not generic
Tri-State Termite & Pest Control Co. has served North Mississippi since 1951 as a locally operated, family-owned business, and holds membership in both the Mississippi Pest Control Association and the National Pest Control Association — industry standards that go beyond what a single technician happens to know. Customer Lee Martin summed up a recent ant treatment simply: “One trip and the ants were gone the next day. The service technician was very friendly and explained everything to us.” That and other real customer experiences are on the company’s reviews page.
